The Ingredients That Taste Like Vacation

The Ingredients That Taste Like Vacation

You don’t always need a plane ticket to feel like you’ve gone somewhere else. Sometimes

vacation starts with a bottle of wine opened in the afternoon, a bowl of olives passed around, or a plate of something delicious appearing before dinner.

This summer, we’re stocking up on the ingredients that make us think of somewhere else,

whether that’s the Mediterranean, the Spanish coast, Sicily, or somewhere a little closer to home.

Fishwife Albacore Tuna with Spanish Lemon

Tinned fish has become something of a summer obsession, and we are very much participating. Fishwife’s Albacore Tuna with Spanish Lemon is one of our favorites, packed in olive oil with Spanish lemon that gives the rich tuna a bright, citrusy edge.

Honestly, the hardest part is deciding whether you’re going to put it on a plate or eat it straight from the tin. We recommend the plate, if only because it gives you an excuse to add good bread, Sicilian olives, and a glass of wine.

Délice d’Argental Papaya

This is the cheese we would put on the table when we want someone to ask, “Wait, what is that?”

Délice d’Argental Papaya is a creamy French soft-ripened cheese with sweet pieces of papaya running through it. It has the richness you want from a cheese board with a bright tropical sweetness that makes perfect sense in the middle of summer.

Sicilian Marinated Olives

If you have ever been to Sicily, you know that olives tend to appear everywhere. On the table before dinner, alongside a drink, tucked into a salad, or sitting in a bowl that everyone keeps reaching into.

Our Sicilian marinated olives bring that same briny, herby flavor to the table. They’re especially good next to creamy cheese and cured meats, although we won’t judge if you eat them by the handful while standing in the kitchen.

Pépín Orange Wine

Orange wine has been everywhere lately, and for good reason. Pépín is made with white grapes that ferment with their skins, giving the wine its golden color and a little more texture than you might expect from a white. It’s bright enough for a hot summer afternoon but has enough character to stand up to salty olives, rich cheese, and a nutty meat. Keep it cold and put it next to the snacks. That’s about all the instruction it needs.

Fermín Ibérico

Jamón Ibérico is the kind of thing that makes you want to slow down a little. Fermín’s is thinly sliced, deeply savory, and rich enough that you really don’t need much of it. Give it some Manchego, a handful of almonds, good bread, and a glass of wine, and suddenly the afternoon has somewhere to be.

Your Summer, Served

Maybe this is what we love most about summer food. You can travel a surprising distance

without going anywhere at all. So come by and pick up a few things that look good, invite some people over, and see what happens. You might not have a plane ticket, but for a few hours, you won’t really miss one.
